
EASTERN CAPE – Two men, Mfundo Dinga (40) and Aphiwe Mpofana (31), appeared before the Mbizana Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 July 2026, on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The court appearance follows a coordinated police interception along the R61, resulting in the recovery of three unlicensed weapons and the impoundment of a suspect vehicle.
The suspects were arrested on Sunday, 12 July 2026, at approximately 17:00. According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, law enforcement acted on a credible tip-off regarding a grey Volkswagen Polo carrying two armed occupants travelling along the R61 near the Seaview locality in the Mzamba policing precinct. Officers subsequently spotted and intercepted the vehicle matching the provided description.
During the stop, authorities recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition from the driver, while a third firearm was seized from the passenger. The grey VW Polo was officially impounded to assist with further investigation.
Following their brief appearance in the Mbizana Magistrate’s Court, both men were remanded in custody. The case has been postponed to Friday, 17 July 2026, to allow for a formal bail application.
