Two suspects aged 31 and 34 years old appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court on 26 April 2019, on a charge of murder. It is alleged that on 2 December 2018, Martin Daniels (26) from Fitchard Street in Helenvale was admitted to the hospital and on 9 December 2018, he died in hospital.

At the time an inquest docket was opened however when the post mortem results were received it indicated that he died of ’head injuries caused by a blunt trauma.’ The inquest was then changed to murder.

During investigations it was alleged that Daniels, a woodcutter was assaulted in the bushes in Marine Drive in Summerstrand. Extensive enquiries in the vicinity led to the arrest of two suspects on Wednesday, 24 April 2019. One was arrested in a shack in the bushes in Driftsands Road in Summerstrand and the other at a house in Marine Drive.

It is unknown at this stage what object was used to assault the deceased. The suspects are also woodcutters and are known in the area. They were detained and charged for murder.

Ulrich Van Niekerk (31) and Daniel Swart (34) have been remanded into custody and will appear in court on Monday, 29 April 2019 for a formal bail application.
