A joint recovery operation is underway in Addo following a fatal vehicle accident that has claimed the lives of three people after a Toyota Hilux bakkie plunged into a river.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Search and Rescue Unit, operating jointly with the Sundays River Valley Local Municipality Rescue Team, launched a formal recovery operation on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 10:30 AM.

The operation follows the discovery of the body of the vehicle’s 35-year-old alleged driver, who had been missing since the incident. Community members, who initiated a search along the river early Sunday morning, located the man’s body among debris on the riverbank. The remains were found approximately one kilometer away from the exact location where the Toyota Hilux bakkie entered the water on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

The recovery of the driver brings the total death toll from the incident to three. The two other occupants of the vehicle, identified as Zimbabwean nationals, were declared dead at the scene on Saturday following the initial crash.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or the cause of the accident, and the recovery operation remains ongoing.
