The immediate volunteering of information by the community of Windvogel in Gelvandale led to the speedy arrest of two robbery suspects. According to police information, at about 11:20, the complainant a ‘jikeleza’ taxi driver (38) picked up the two suspects at Cleary Park and was heading towards Salt Lake when one of the suspect’s pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the driver and his cousin (36) who was the front seated passenger.

Both men were robbed of their cell phones. When the terrified driver swerved into oncoming traffic in Stanford Road, the two suspect’s, aged 24 and 26 jumped out of the car and ran off. Members from the Mount Road Cluster Operational Command Centre were in the vicinity and were stopped by the complainants who reported the incident.

The community in Windvogel informed police of where the suspects were hiding and both were arrested at the back of separate houses in the area. The stolen cell phones were recovered. The suspects were positively identified by the complainant. It was later established that the firearm used was a gas gun.

The suspects are detained on charges of robbery with a firearm, possession of an imitation firearm in terms of the Firearms Control Act and assault. They will appear in court on Tuesday, 18 December 2018.
