Swift reaction sees thieves arrested, Despatch

On Wednesday, 14 November 2018 around 02:00, police responded to a complaint of theft from a motor vehicle in progress at a house in Elizabeth Street, Heuwelkruin, Despatch. A police van was then dispatched to the scene. Whilst on the scene a few metres away, police noticed three men scaling a boundary wall and started to give chase.

The suspects fled towards the direction of nearby bushes however, police managed to arrest the two men and recovered a backpack with a cellphone, a cell phone charger, a CD player and a GPS device.

A third suspect is still at large. A preliminary investigation revealed that the items that were in possession of the two men were positively linked to the incident of theft from motor vehicle. The two men aged 25 and 30 are due to appear on Thursday, 15 November 2018 at the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on charges of theft from motor vehicle and possession of suspected stolen property.

The Acting Cluster Commander of Uitenhage, Brigadier Ronald Koll commended the members from Despatch and said: “”When operational duties are directed and coordinated, arrests are affected to clamp down on property related crimes. At this time of the year, we also urge residents to be on high alert and report to the police any suspicious individuals or motor vehicles in their neighbourhood”.
