Suspect sentenced and convicted for rape

A 26 year old Inathinkosi Weni was found guilty and was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment by the Zwelitsha Regional Court on 21 July 2017.

On 29 May 2016 a 68 year old woman was sexually assaulted at her home in Tshabho Location, Ndevana outside King Williams Town. By the time of the incident the suspect was unknown but thorough investigation led to the alleged suspect being arrested. The suspect was linked through DNA and was immediately arrested and appeared in Zwelitsha Magistrate Court on 17 February 2017. He was denied bail and was remanded in custody. He appeared several times at Court and his case was transferred to Zwelitsha Regional Court on 15 March 2017.

The Commander for King Williams Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Zitulele Mahlambeni welcomes the judgement and applauded the members for their determination and thorough investigations which convinced the courts to hand out a guilty verdict and a lengthy jail time. I am so proud that the suspect’s first appearance was in February 2017 and within five months he was found guilty and sentenced, this shows commitment from our members in line with the back to basics approach towards policing, he added.
