A 27-year-old man has been arrested by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit in connection with the murder of an eight-year-old girl, whose body was discovered on Monday, 6 October 2025.
The tragic sequence of events began when the young victim, Veronique May, was reported missing by her family at the SAPS Kamesh station on Sunday, 5 October 2025, after 17:00. Police immediately launched a search operation.
During the investigation, authorities obtained information identifying a man with whom Veronique was last seen on Sunday evening. SAPS Kamesh located the individual and, due to rising community tensions, removed him to the police station for his own safety.
The breakthrough in the case came on Monday, 6 October, following questioning of the suspect. The man subsequently led the investigating officer to a premises on De Booi Street in Langa, where the lifeless body of the child was discovered in one of the rooms.
The suspect was immediately placed under arrest on a charge of murder. He is scheduled to make his first appearance before the Kariega Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 8 October 2025.
