A 40 year old Schauderville man is appearing in the Gelvandale magistrates’ court on 2 July 2019, on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

It is alleged that on Monday evening, 1 July 2019 at about 23:30, PE Public Order Policing members received information of a firearm at a house in Lawler Street, Schauderville. A.38 revolver and 4 rounds of ammunition was found hidden in a corner of the room. The suspect was arrested and detained and investigation revealed that the firearm was reported stolen in Grahamstown in April 2019.

In another incident, on Monday, 1 July 2019 at about 09:30, SAPS Gelvandale members acted on information received of a shotgun hidden on the roof of a house in Hartebees Street, Helenvale. The shotgun was found in a black bag on top of the toilet roof. The shotgun was reported stolen in Pearson in May 2016. No arrests were made.

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Major General Thembisile Patekile thanked the community for providing information to the police. “The continued recovery and seizure of firearms is a deterrent for the commission of serious and violent crimes. I continue to urge the community to be our eyes and ears by providing information on criminal activities,” added Major General Patekile.
