SAPS Algoa Park detectives are urgently seeking the communities’ assistance in tracing suspects allegedly involved in a murder and robbery incident which took place early on the morning of 29 November 2020, in Bennett Street in Sidwell.

It is alleged that at about 06:30, Steven Branders (52) was walking from a shop in Haupt Street into Bennett Street when two unknown males approached him. CCTV footage show that Branders tried to ward off his attackers who overpowered him and pushed him on the ground. He was stabbed several times. One of the suspect’s grabbed something from his hand, possibly his cellphone and they got into an old white Mazda Midge or Ford which reversed and picked up the two suspects. Two other males were in the vehicle.

Branders died prior to receiving any medical attention. The motive for the fatal stabbing is robbery.

From the CCTV footage, the vehicle is very old and may have a dent in the front and the back window is totally broken. The window is fitted with a makeshift plastic covering. There were passing vehicles who may have witnessed the attack.

A case of murder and robbery is under investigation. Police is appealing to the communities to assist them in tracing these cold blooded criminals or the vehicle or any witnesses to the incident to contact D/W/O Errol Kleinhans at SAPS Algoa Park on 083 243 4567 or 041 4011061 or Crime Stop 08600 10111 or their nearest police station.
