Swift response by SAPS Bethelsdorp Crime Prevention members (CPU) to the sound of gunshots, resulted in the arrest of four males and the recovery of firearm on 19 June 2022.

It is alleged that at about 17:30 while the CPU members were patrolling in the Qunu area, they reacted to gunshots going off in the informal settlement.

They were informed by the community that a Toyota Tazz with four occupants sped off towards Standford Road.

The members spotted the vehicle and pulled it off in Standford Road. The occupants and the vehicle was thoroughly searched and a firearm (serial number filed off) was found on the front floor of the vehicle.

Two rounds of ammunition was also found in the vehicle. The vehicle was also confiscated for further investigation.

The suspects, aged between 23 and 37 years, were detained on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

SAPS Bethelsdorp detectives are also probing their possible involvement in other crimes committed in the area.

They are expected to appear in court soon.
