Quick response from a local security guard led to the arrest of one suspect while police are on the hunt for four of his accomplices after they allegedly robbed several people in a taxi, on the afternoon of 19 May 2021.

It is alleged that at approximately 16:40 the five suspects armed with firearms got into a taxi in Uitenhage Road, Sydenham and allegedly robbed the passengers of their personal belongings. When the taxi reached the corners of Govan Mbeki Avenue and Quick Street in North End, the suspects got out of the taxi and approached a security guard who was working at a local shop in Govan Mbeki Avenue.

One of the suspects fired shots at the guard, who returned fire. The guard (46) injured one suspect (age unknown) in the upper leg while the other four fled on foot.

The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital where he is under police guard. Three cell phones suspected to be taken from the passengers in the taxi, were recovered.

A case of armed robbery is under investigation and more charges could be added as the investigation continues. The suspect will appear at the Gqeberha magistrate court during the week.

Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the other suspects is requested to contact the SAPS Mount Road crime office on 041 394 6243 or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

Information received will be treated with strict confidentiality.
