Residents of a rural Eastern Cape community were recently compelled to collect water from a local river after a complete failure of municipal infrastructure severed their access to clean tap water, leading to significant public unrest.

The crisis in Qunu, which came to a head just weeks ago, saw frustrated residents resort to protest, blocking the vital N2 highway in a dramatic call for action. The protest was a direct response to a prolonged interruption of their water supply, attributed to critical failures in the area’s aging water infrastructure.

The situation became so dire that the community, left with no running water, reverted to drawing water from the river that flows through the area for their daily needs. This return to an untreated water source raises immediate public health concerns about waterborne diseases.

The provincial authorities acknowledged the crisis and initiated a stopgap response. The intervention necessitated the deployment of municipal water tankers to provide an emergency supply of potable water to the community while engineers work on repairs to the broken infrastructure.

A spokesperson for the community confirmed the desperation that led to the protest action, stating that the river was their only option before the tankers arrived. “When the taps run dry, we have no choice. The river is our old source, but it is not safe. We need a permanent solution, not just promises,” the spokesperson said.

The incident in Qunu highlights the persistent and widespread challenge of water delivery and infrastructure maintenance in many rural municipalities across the Eastern Cape.

It is alleged that Qunu has had no proper running water since 2014.
