The AmaMpondo Kingdom is embroiled in a deepening succession dispute following the death of King Zanozuko Sigcau in 2022, as rival royal factions each proclaim their own leader.
The AmaRhelane royal family recently announced Yolisa Sigcau, the late king’s son, as the rightful heir to the throne. However, the AmaFaku faction has rejected this claim, instead recognizing Dumelani Sigcau as their acting king—a move backed by the Eastern Cape provincial government.
Government Backs AmaFaku Faction
Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Mabuyane has formally acknowledged Dumlani Sigcau as the legitimate interim ruler, citing an official gazette recognizing the AmaFaku faction. This decision has intensified tensions, with the AmaRhelane faction insisting that Yolisa Sigcau, as the late king’s direct descendant, is the rightful successor.
Escalating Legal Battles
The dispute has spilled into the courts, with both factions filing interdicts to block the other’s claims. The AmaFaku faction has barred Yolisa Sigcau’s ascension, while the AmaRhelane family has challenged Dumlani Sigcau’s legitimacy.
Newsroom Africa’s Liam Vumisa, reporting from a briefing by the AmaFaku faction, described a heavy police presence as Dumlani Sigcau arrived to address supporters. “The acting king, recognized by the provincial government, is set to outline his position on the kingship,” Vumisa reported.
Historical Divisions Resurface
The conflict traces back to longstanding divisions within the AmaMpondo royal house. The AmaFaku faction asserts its authority through government recognition, while the AmaRhelane faction argues that tradition mandates the late king’s son as successor.
With no immediate resolution in sight, the kingdom faces prolonged instability. Observers warn that the dispute could further fracture the AmaMpondo nation unless a mediated compromise is reached.
The provincial government has yet to comment on whether it will review its stance, leaving the future of the AmaMpondo monarchy uncertain.
