A 30 year old man was arrested in Mqanduli forest after he robbed a shop owner in Mqanduli town on Thursday, 15 March 2018 at about 14:45. It is alleged that the suspect and another unknown man entered a shop and demanded money at gunpoint before fleeing the shop.

Mqanduli SAPS members spotted one suspect who fired shots at the members who returned fire. The suspect then fled to the taxi rank where he hijacked a van that was full of passengers that were to be transported to one of the localities around Mqanduli.

During a high speed chase, the suspect lost control of the vehicle and collided with an oncoming municipality van causing a head on collision.

When seeing that he will be cornered, he fled on foot to the nearby forest. Police conducted an intensive search in the forest and managed to arrest the suspect. An undisclosed amount of cash and a 9mm Vector pistol with 9 rounds of ammunition were seized.

During the crossfire, a 30 and 32 year old men were injured and were rushed to Mqanduli clinic where the 32 year old succumbed to his injuries and the 30 year old was rushed to Mthatha hospital in a stable condition.

A murder and attempted murder cases were registered and handed over to Ipid for further investigation.

A business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition were opened against the suspect who has been linked to other armed robberies around Mthatha.

He will appear before Mqanduli Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 March 2018.
