Five male suspects between the ages of 20 and 34 years were arrested by Duncan Village members on 10 January 2020, at about 04:00. The members followed up on information of Robbery with firearm that led them to Mercedes Benz Avenue informal settlement where they spotted the silver grey Golf 5.

They immediately ask for backup from the Community Service Centre vehicle. When they approached the suspect’s vehicle, the suspects tried to flee the scene towards Nkandla direction but police managed to chase and apprehend them.

Upon searching the vehicle, they found three firearms, a Luger 9mm short, Vektor 9mm short firearm and a short black unidentifiable firearm with 10 rounds of ammunition hidden at the back seat.

In the boot of the vehicle, the members found one laptop, liquor in boxes, airtime machine, one amplifier, three fuel and oil filters. Jamming devices and vehicle keys were also recovered from the suspects.

It has been discovered that the Luger pistol was initially used to commit a robbery at Mdantsane and a case was opened at Inyibiba during 2017.

These suspects will be profiled to determine their involvement in previous cases of crime that have been committed in the area of Duncan and surroundings.

All suspects will appear in court soon facing charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. Investigation continues and more charges may be added later.

Eastern Cape acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Andre Swart commanded members for the success. “Your efforts have prevented potential deaths, robbery, and violent crime that was planned to happen in this cluster. The three (3) firearms are a boost that is very welcomed in the fight against proliferation of illegal weapons. One illegal firearm taken from the hands of criminals is one step closer to ensuring that our people are and feel safe in their homes and their immediate environment.” said, Major General Swart.
