The 64 year old Mpintsoli Kunjana was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday, 26 October 2018 by Zwelitsha Regional Court.

This conviction follows after the convicted Mpintsoli who sexually assaulted a 12 year old girl, his neighbour, from October 2016, in their village at Tshambo, outside King Williams Town. The incident which took place from October 2016 till December 2016 was witnessed by a community member. A relative reported the incident to the local police station and he was immediately arrested.

During his bail application, in March 2017, the Investigating Officer Sergeant Vuyo Landingwe successfully opposed bail and the accused remained in custody until his trial.

In October 2018, the accused stood trial in the Zwelitsha Regional Court after several appearances. On the 25 October 2018 he was found guilty of two counts of Rape, and on the 26 October 2018 he was sentenced two life imprisonments which will run concurrently.

The Commander for King Williams Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Zitulele Mahlambeni has welcomed the convictions and he also extended his appreciation to the Investigating Officers and the justice system for a job well done. These sentences will definitely send the message that the law will deal harshly with perpetrators of crime, he added.
