Police in Mariannhill have successfully rearrested a 28-year-old rape suspect who escaped from custody earlier this week. The suspect, who had been arrested on Monday, fled the same day, prompting an intensive manhunt.
Authorities located the fugitive on Thursday morning, 22 May 2025, at a hostel in Umbilo. Police spokesperson confirmed that the suspect will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court later today on charges of escaping lawful custody.
Following his court appearance, he will be transferred to Ekhombe, where he faces multiple rape charges. The suspect allegedly targeted learners residing in cottages at a school in Nkandla.
