Grahamstown High Court convicted and sentenced 21-year-old Jonathan Lombard for the rape of a young boy, who was 8-years-old at the time of the rape.

It is alleged that the 8-year-old victim had been sharing a room with Lombard and his brother on Wednesday 5 February 2020 at about 21:20 when the child’s mother heard him screaming from the room. On investigating the reason for her child crying she saw the son’s friend running from the house in Umasizakhe, Graaff-Reinet.

On questioning the child, the victim who could not speak properly showed his buttocks to his mother.

A case of rape was registered at Graaff-Reinet Police Station on Wednesday 5 February 2020 and the case was handed over to Graaff Reinet Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS), after the Victim’s mother had taken the young Boy to the Graaff-Reinet Clinic where it was confirmed that the child had been raped

The suspected person was traced and arrested on Friday 7 February 2020

The suspect Jonathan Lombard’s case was transferred to Grahamstown High Court where he pleaded guilty on Monday 1 February 2021.

He was sentenced to twenty (20) years imprisonment on Tuesday 2 February 2021.

Captain Theo Van Zyl Commander of Graaff Reinet Family violence, Child Protection and sexual offenses unit mentioned that Detective Sergant Zikile Mathews November made sure that the suspect remained in custody throughout the trial till the sentencing. His hardwork and dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed when opposing bail against the accused. He gave a good account of himself throughout investigation and that the sentence handed to the accused should be a deterrent to potential perpetrators of Gender based violence against women and children.
