The police’s mandate is to fight against the proliferation of drugs and crime therefore every effort must be made to stop this illicit trade and arrest those responsible for the illegal trafficking.
In an intelligence driven operation on Saturday, 8 May 2021, Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) members arrested a 37-year-old male while travelling in a bus from Gauteng to Gqeberha with a cocktail of drugs in his possession.
At about 10:00, the bus was intercepted while driving on the Old Uitenhage Road in Motherwell. The alleged suspect and his bags were searched.
The following drugs were found in his bag:
1000 mandrax tablets valued at R80 000
½ kg cocaine – valued at R425 000
1318 pink pills (ecstasy) – valued at R79 080
358 blue pills (ecstasy– valued at R21 480
1309 green pills (ecstasy) – valued at R 78 540
Total estimated value of the drugs are R684 100.
The suspect was arrested for possession of drugs and will appear in the Gqeberha magistrate court on Monday, 10 May 2021. It is suspected that these drugs were destined for Gqeberha.
Also on Saturday, 8 May 2021 at about 15:00, AGU members also confiscated dagga in Corsa Street in Algoa Park. It is alleged that when a group of males saw the police vehicle, they dropped a packet and ran. About 60 small packets of dagga were found inside. Estimated value is R3000.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brig Luntu Ngubelanga commended the AGU members for their speedy reaction to the information and the confiscation and subsequent arrest. ‘Illegal drugs defeat the journey to a safer and drug free society. Drug dealers are warned that we, the SAPS are a step ahead of their activities and our efforts to cripple their business are intensifying every day to ensure the safety of our citizens. There is no place for them in this metro and we will not hesitate to expose, arrest and send them to prison,’ warned Brig Ngubelanga.
