R2 mil theft: 'Mental and frail health care' center's bookkeeper sentenced

Johannes Willem Gieselbach (45), who was employed as bookkeeper at Aurora Special Care Centre for children and adults with mental and physical disabilities, has been sentenced to eight years direct imprisonment by the East London Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 22 July 2020.

The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation revealed that Gieselbach was stealing in excess of R2 million from the centre between May 2018 and August 2019.

The investigation unmasked a series of unlawful transactions where funds amounting to almost R2 million was laundered and transferred into the accused various bank accounts.

The court convicted Gieselbach for over 160 counts of theft on 19 February 2020, culminating in the sentencing judgment.

He has been sentenced to eight years direct imprisonment and additionally been ordered to repay an amount of R986 706.96 back to the centre.
