R150k worth of abalone recovered, man arrested, Aliwal North

On 22 June 2018, at 22:10 positive information were followed up by Aliwal North SAPS. A white Nissan X-trail was stopped on the N6 road about 3 km outside Aliwal North. It is alleged that the vehicle was from East London traveling to Johannesburg.

On further investigation 17 bags of abalone were found inside the vehicle.

A 34 year old suspect was arrested for the contravention of Marine Living Resources Act, possession of abalone.

Two thousand three hundred twenty six abalone units to the value of R150 000.00 and the vehicle were confiscated. The suspect will appear in the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on Monday 2018-06-25.

The Cluster Commander Brig Xakavu commended all the various police units involved in the successful arrest and confiscation.
