Concerted efforts to fight the proliferation of illegal firearms and the capability to effectively address trio crimes in the Uitenhage Cluster paid off on Wednesday, 10 October 2018, when alert police officers responded immediately to a robbery at a business at about 14:45 this afternoon, in Cuyler Street, Uitenhage.

It is alleged that the owner was busy inside his shop in Cuyler Street, Uitenhage, when two unknown men entered the shop, of which one was armed with a firearm. Another male suspect remained standing in the doorway. The suspects threatened the owner with the firearm and took cigarettes, toiletries and airtime. The suspects then fled on foot from the scene.

The owner immediately made alarm and SAPS members in the vicinity acted promptly and arrested one suspect successfully and confiscated the firearm that was allegedly used during the robbery. The other two suspects managed to evade arrest, but detectives from SAPS Uitenhage are following up on all possible leads and the arrest of the outstanding suspects are imminent.

The 33 year old male suspect is due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 12 October 2018 on a charge of armed robbery.

It was later established that the firearm used was a gas pistol. Members also recovered some of the stolen property.

The Station Commander for Uitenhage, Brigadier Laurence Soekoe praised the police officers for their collaborative approach in combatting crime effectively in their community.
