Elona Sombulula, a dedicated prosecutor, was fatally shot near his home in Mthentu in what authorities believe was a targeted attack. The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of legal officials in South Africa.

According to police reports, Sombulula was shot once in the upper body and died shortly afterward. His family described him as their sole breadwinner, leaving them devastated by his sudden death.

“When we received the news, we were in deep pain because he was the person who looked after everyone here,” a grieving family member said. “We believe he was killed because of his work—he handled dangerous cases. The fact that this happened just one house away from his home shows that his killers had been watching his movements.”

Justice Minister Condemns Attack, Calls for Protection of Prosecutors

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi strongly condemned the killing, warning that such violence could deter prosecutors from performing their duties.

“We cannot have prosecutors fearing for their lives when they go to work,” Kubayi said. “As a country, we must ensure that those who uphold the law are protected, not targeted by criminals evading justice.”

This is not the first time a prosecutor has been assassinated in South Africa. Last year, another legal official was killed in a similar manner, raising alarms over the safety of those working in the justice system.

Calls for Increased Security Measures

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has urged law enforcement to tighten protections for prosecutors, emphasizing the need for swift action.

Meanwhile, police investigations into Sombulula’s murder are ongoing. His funeral is scheduled for the 17th of next week, as the community mourns the loss of a man who dedicated his life to justice—only to become a victim of the very violence he fought against.
