Tactical Response Team members deployed at Maclear conducted a search operation after receiving intelligence about an unlicensed firearm in the area of Tshikitsha locality in Katkop on 19 June 2020.

On arrival at the premises, the police were shot at through the window however still managed to arrest the suspect.

A bullet shrapnel hit one of the members. He was immediately taken to hospital where he was treated and was released soon after receiving medical care. He is already back at work.

A 9mm Astra firearm with live rounds of ammunition and two spent cartridges was recovered. Upon circulation it was established that the firearm belongs to a man from Southridge, Mthatha.

A case of attempted murder and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition was opened and is currently under investigation.

The 40-year-old suspect will appear Mount Fletcher Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 June 2020.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended members for the sterling success and wished the injured member a speedy recovery. “The safety of our members is of prime importance.” She encouraged other members on duty to take care of each other and protect themselves on duty.
