In an intelligence driven operation, Public Order Policing members in Gqeberha recovered three firearms as well as various calibre ammunition at a flat let in Seyisi Street in Kwazakele on 17 May 2023.

It is alleged that at about 14:35, members breached the flat by breaking the lock as information indicated that no one was living there but firearms are kept at the place.

Upon searching the place, three firearms (revolver, Baby Browning and an Uzzi) together with magazines were found hidden in a bag in a wardrobe. Members also confiscated 88 rounds of ammunition and a pair of handcuffs.

An enquiry docket is opened for further investigation.

The serial numbers of two firearms were filed off while ownership of the third firearm is yet to be established.

In the last three months police have recovered 150 firearms in the metro.

Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata commended the members for immediately operationalising the information received.

’These firearms will be sent to ballistics for analysis as we believe that it was used in the commission of many crimes. We urge communities to report any strange activities in their neighbourhoods. Although we have recovered 150 firearms, there are still plenty that are out there, in the wrong hands however, a firearm out of the hands of a criminal, lessens the commission of a serious or violent crime, added Maj Gen Ncata.
