Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga has strongly condemned the attack on two police Sergeants in New Brighton, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) last night, 25 February 2021. “An attack such as this is a direct attack on the authority of the State and we will leave no stone unturned until those responsible are arrested and brought to court”, vowed Lt Gen Ntshinga.

It is alleged that on Thursday evening, 25 February 2021 at about 19:10, the members were on duty and patrolling when they stopped at Nkonjane Street, New Brighton, Gqeberha.

They were approached by four unknown armed males who ordered them to hand over their firearms. When the officers refused, the suspects split up and went to both sides of the vehicle. As the driver opened his door, he was shot in the upper body.

Both members were then taken out the van and robbed of their personal belongings including firearms taken. The suspects drove off in the police vehicle which was later found abandoned in Jam-Ally Street in Kwazakele. The other Sergeant was not injured.

The wounded member was taken to hospital for medical attention.

Cases of attempted murder, vehicle hijacking and robbery (with a firearm) are being investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).
