Mkhanyisi Gcwabe (46) appeared before the Ntabankulu High Court on Thursday, 24 August 2023 where he was convicted and sentenced for a police murder.

On 19 July 2022, Sergeant Mzuvukile Siphendu (40) attached to Tabase police station in Mount Fletcher was brutally murdered at Ntsundu tavern. The investigation revealed that Gcwabe had a dispute with the police Sergeant where Gcwabe pulled out his firearm and fatally shot the official.

On 21 July 2022, Gcwabe was arrested by Mthatha based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation. He was remanded in police custody for the duration of his trial after his bail application was successfully opposed.

Gcwabe made numerous court appearances until he was convicted. He was sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment for murder with no option of a fine.

The Eastern Cape Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General Obed Ngwenya commended the investigation team for the sterling job that led to the conviction and sentencing of the accused person.
