Since 3 December 2018, a total of 12 suspected gang affiliates are in police custody for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, theft of vehicles and hijacking.

The National Intervention Unit team are once again deployed to the Northern areas of Port Elizabeth for the next three months. The team of 30 members started their duties a day after the visit by Police Minister, Mr Bheki Cele, MP who visited Port Elizabeth on 3 December 2018.

The Minister of Police, the National Commissioner, General KJ Sitole and the Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen LE Ntshinga engaged with stakeholders from the areas of Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp. The Police Minister returned to the city on 10 December 2018 to engage with the communities.

The National Intervention Unit will be deployed only in the Northern areas focussing on intelligence driven and target orientated information.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga stated that the police will be stamping the authority of the State on these criminals who have no respect or regard for human life. ‘We will continue with our integrated approach to ensure community safety. Our actions will be intensified until we are satisfied that the area has stabilised and the communities are safe,’ added Lt Gen Ntshinga.

Lt Gen Ntshinga once again appealed to communities to work with the police towards our common goal of ensuring safety of our citizens.
