Two of our equine colleagues were attacked by a suspect they least expected. Thunder and Lorika and two other police horses were patrolling the Sherwood area with their police riders when they were suddenly attacked by a black pitbull dog.

It is alleged that at about 13:20, on 23 June 2018, PE Mounted Unit were patrolling at the corners of Kraai and Caledon Streets, when a pitbull suddenly came out of nowhere and attacked the horses. The pitbull jumped as high up to their tails and bit two of the horses in their rear.

One of the rider’s was thrown off his horse as the horse reacted to the unexpected attack.

Both horses received several stitches at the Westering veterinary and the rider was taken to hospital for treatment. The owner of the dog was traced and police were informed that the dog had escaped from the yard and has since not returned.

The owner resided in Mitford Street.

A case of malicious injury to property and vicious dog at large has been opened at SAPS Kabega Park. The horses were treated, sedated and back at their stables.
