The over exploitation of abalone from the ocean poses a serious threat to the extinction and the protection of this species from illegal poachers rest on the duty of the SAPS.
In our efforts to ensure that the endangered marine life is protected, members of the PE K9 Unit and Marine Coastal arrested a 20 year old suspect during the early hours of the morning of 19 December 2017.
Information was received about illegal poaching and a stakeout was conducted.
At about 02:00, a suspect emerged from bushes in Marine Drive. On searching his bag, 243 units of abalone (50 kg) were seized. The estimated street value is R50 000.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
