EASTERN CAPE – A targeted anti-gang patrol in Humansdorp under Operation Karabo has yielded significant results, leading to the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect and the seizure of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The successful intervention underscores the ongoing collaboration between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to dismantle local criminal networks and enhance community safety.

On Sunday, 12 July 2026, joint law enforcement units were conducting routine anti-gang patrols in the Humansdorp area when they observed two suspicious males. Upon being approached by the officers, the individuals attempted to flee on foot. Law enforcement personnel immediately initiated a pursuit, eventually cornering one of the suspects inside a nearby shack.

A subsequent search of the premises revealed the presence of an unlicensed firearm and associated ammunition. The 27-year-old suspect was arrested on the spot and charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Both the weapon and the ammunition were officially seized as evidence to prevent further illegal circulation.

A SAPS spokesperson confirmed the details of the operation, commending the swift and coordinated action of the joint teams. The spokesperson noted that such proactive measures are critical to disrupting gang-related activities in the region.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court in the near future to face formal charges. Authorities have indicated that Operation Karabo will continue to maintain a visible and proactive presence in the area to deter criminal activity.
