Sergeant Kayeni Malila, of Motherwell SAPS, was congratulated by the Motherwell Detective Commander, Lt Col Smidt for the excellent service rendered by him on 18 January 2017.

Sgt Malila was the member that was contacted by the farmer after the hijacked vehicle was spotted in the bushes in which the two American tourists were hijacked, robbed and tied up in the bushes.

When Sgt Malila received the message he responded immediately and on reaching the hijacked vehicle he called for backup by crime prevention members and also requested for assistance by the SAPS helicopter in the search for suspects and victims in the area.

He was the first member on the scene and was also first at the two victims after they were spotted by the helicopter.

His swift actions ensured that the two victims can return safely home to their family and loved ones.

On 12 January 2017, the body of 50-year-old Mr Mzukisi Makaya was found tied up close to his vehicle under similar circumstances in the same area.

The saved couple yesterday praised the SAPS for their reaction and described it as “something out of an action movie with a good ending”.
