EASTERN CAPE – An off-duty police constable has been rescued unharmed following a targeted kidnapping and robbery ordeal at a guesthouse in Gqeberha. The incident, which occurred on 17 August 2026, has prompted a swift response from law enforcement, with a dedicated investigative team now working to identify and apprehend the suspects involved.
According to a police spokesperson, the ordeal began at approximately 23:30 at a guesthouse located on Buckingham Road in Mount Croix. Three unknown suspects accosted the premises, initially demanding cash. When cash was not produced, the suspects proceeded to rob the occupants of their personal belongings.
During the incident, the suspects demanded that all rooms in the guesthouse be opened. They seized various tenant belongings, including a television set. Upon searching the rooms, the suspects discovered that one of the tenants was an off-duty police official.
The police spokesperson confirmed that following this realization, the suspects specifically targeted the constable. They confiscated his personal belongings, tied and blindfolded him, and forcibly transported him in their vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The abducted officer was later released and is currently receiving the necessary administrative and psychological support following the traumatic incident.
A police spokesperson stated that a specialized investigative team has been activated to trace those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice. Authorities noted that the broader circumstances surrounding the incident, including the specific motive for targeting the guesthouse and the officer, remain under active investigation.
