Following five years of investigation, Mthatha Deputy Judge President Zamani Nhlangulela handed down sentences in the Mthatha High Court on Monday 2 July 2018, on two accused who brutally shot and killed the Station Commander of Elliotdale, Lt Col Nomalizo Dukumbana on 17 May 2013.

One of the accused was a police officer.

Phumzile Ngqayimbana (46) and his co-accused Siyamcela Ntshitshi (38) were each sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 6 years for possession of illegal firearms and 3 years for unlawful possession of ammunition.

The sentences will run concurrently.

The Eastern Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Andre Swart welcomed the judgement and said, “This is a lesson to all that no one is above the law. We will forever remember our colleague who was brutally killed by her subordinates. May her family find peace after this judgement,” he added.
