A former police Warrant Officer Jimmy Desmond Marais (49) appeared in the New Law court on Wednesday 11 March 2020, for allegedly defrauding the South African Police Service (SAPS) approximately R18 000 during August 2017.

It is alleged that during this period, while Marais was stationed at Mount Road Police station’s Vehicle Identification Safeguarding Section (VISS) in Port Elizabeth, he, on more than one occasion submitted false travel claims.

It is further alleged that during this period he traveled to Ezingolweni Magistrate court in KwaZulu-Natal for a week, during one of the days that he was supposed to be at court he went for shopping at Pietermaritzburg.

On his return to the station, when he allegedly submitted a claim for the trip and for clothing. However, the station discovered a discrepancy in his claim in that the date which was printed on the clothing receipt was the date Marais was supposed to be in court.

The station referred the case to the Serious Corruption Investigation of the Hawks for further investigation.

As a result of a thorough investigation, the latter served Marais with a summons court to present himself in court Wednesday.

He was released on a warning and his next court appearance will be on 24 March 2020.
