
A 35-year-old woman was arrested by SAPS Motherwell and the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in Gqeberha on Thursday, 5 June 2025, for the alleged attempted murder and abuse of her 3-year-old son.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 18:30 in the Shukushukuma area of Motherwell. A witness alerted authorities after noticing the suspect assaulting the toddler with an empty bottle. The witness intervened, stopping the attack, and immediately notified the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The child, who sustained visible injuries to his head and face, was taken to the hospital by family members for medical treatment.
The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 9 June 2025, facing charges of attempted murder and child abuse.
Police have commended the witness for their swift action in preventing further harm to the child. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
