We are very disturbed and shocked by the brutal killing of a mother and her two sons in the early hours of22 July 2018, at their homestead in Newtown locality Kotishini Administration Area, Mthatha.

Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga said, “Our concern is that such incidents continues to happen despite several efforts done through community engagements programmes to create awareness around the prevention of crimes against women and children. The SAPS is still being summoned to crime scenes where our women and children has been slain for no reason,” said Ntshinga.

The bodies of the three victims, a 54 year old mother, her two sons, aged 10 and 7 years old, were found on the crime scene at 05:00. Her 6 year old daughter was found alive, in a critical condition and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

A neighbour who heard screams coming from the homestead alerted the police. It is alleged that unknown men entered the premises and attacked the family with what is believed to be sharp objects.

The motive for the killings is not yet known and police investigations are underway.

We condemn this horrific incident in the strongest possible terms. “I would once again call upon all our rural communities to urgently combine their efforts with our Traditional Leadership, Station Commanders and Community Police Forums to discuss workable strategies and solutions in protecting our women and children.

“I have activated a multi-disciplinary task team comprising of experienced detectives of the South African Police Service Eastern Cape to investigate this attack,” Provincial Commissioner Ntshinga said. “We will not rest until we have tracked down these heartless criminals and bring them to book.” she added.
