The police confiscated a total of 23 firearms and R440 000 worth of drugs in a series of operations in Port Elizabeth’s northern areas last month. The operation led to almost 100 gangsters being arrested.

The police are committed to stop crime and swiftly took action, after the latest gang shooting on Saturday, around 9 p.m. where a 43-year-old woman was shot in the leg outside a well known gangster’s house in Helenvale. The police have withheld the name of the woman shot for her own safety. Apparently an unknown number of gunmen opened fire at the alleged gangster’s house. The woman was taken to hospital.

Operation “lockdown” yielded good results, and last month 93 people were arrested. In a string of operations to counter-gang violence in the northern areas.

Last month it was reported that 13 people were killed and 13 more were wounded in separate shootings.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said yesterday the gang clampdown operations were in full swing and yielding positive results.

“The 93 suspects are all linked to gangs. The arrests last month were for gang-related crimes ranging from murder and attempted murder to dealing in drugs and armed robbery,” she said.
