A 29-year-old man has been arrested by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Despatch for the alleged murder of 29-year-old Shervago Hanse. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 4 October 2025.
According to police records, the chain of events began at approximately 04:00 at a residence on Albatros Street in Reservoir Hills, Despatch. The homeowner had requested that her children’s friends leave the premises following a binge-drinking party.
As the group was vacating the property, an argument erupted between one of the friends and the homeowner’s daughter. During the altercation, it is alleged that the individual threw a stone, which missed its intended target and instead struck a two-year-old toddler.
Police reports indicate that the toddler’s uncle, upon seeing his injured nephew, retaliated and stabbed the stone-thrower, Shervago Hanse. Hanse was later transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The 29-year-old uncle was subsequently arrested and is scheduled to appear in the Kariega Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, 6 October 2025, to face a charge of murder.
