A 20-year-old man was convicted and sentenced for the rape of a 12-year-old boy. The accused, Sindile Habana was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Somerset East Regional Court on the 13 November 2020.

It is alleged that the victim was taken to the residence of the suspect on a farm in the Somerset East District, where he was raped several times. A case of rape was registered at Somerset East Police Station on Tuesday 5 January 2017, and the case was handed over to Somerset East Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. This happened after the victim’s parents became suspicious and took the boy to a local clinic at Somerset East.

A day later, the suspect was traced and arrested on Wednesday, 6 January 2017.

Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga commended the outcome and thanked Graaff Reinet Family violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit for their hard work and dedication during the investigation and leading evidence throughout the trial.
