A 52 year old man was arrested by Aliwal North Detectives for stabbing his 32 year old cousin to death on 16 October 2019, at the Joe Gqabi settlement in Aliwal North. It is alleged that a group of friends were sitting and drinking alcohol when an argument erupted between the male suspect and his girlfriend. A female cousin then intervened and defused the argument.

It is alleged that the male suspect then left the premises, but came back a while later with a Rambo Jungle knife and targeted his cousin.

The deceased [cousin] sustained one fatal stab wound on the chest. Community members assisted in apprehending the suspect and summoned the police and paramedics to the scene.

The suspect will remain in custody until his court appearance on 18 October 2019, on charges of (1) murder, (2) resisting arrest, and (3) assault on police.

The Aliwal North Station Commander, Colonel Chris Wright, condemned the senseless killing saying: “The SAPS regards incidents of violence perpetrated against women and children as very serious offences”. He also urged members of the community to remain calm and allow the law take its course. “We understand that the community has been angered by this incident, but please allow the justice process to take place”, said Col Wright.
