Police have opened an inquest docket after an elderly man burned to death in his house in Rocklands. It is alleged that on Sunday, 16 June 2019 at about 03:35, a security vehicle was patrolling in Culturama Street, Rocklands when he noticed a house on fire and immediately alerted the Fire Department and the South African Police Service.
According to the security guard a part of the house was already burnt out prior to his arrival. Johan Potgieter (74) stayed alone at the house. After the fire was extinguished the body of Potgieter was found in the kitchen. At this stage no foul play is expected and the cause of the fire still needs to be investigated.
An inquest is currently under investigation.
