The altruism of an off duty police officer is indicative of his selfless act to eradicate the proliferation of illegal firearms and to protect the communities we serve.

It is alleged that on Thursday, 18 November 2021 at about 08:30, Lt Col Eldridge Schoeman of SAPS Kwazakele was on vacation leave and was waiting to pick up his electrician outside a house in Anita Drive in Barcelona Ext 12 when he noticed a male walking from Gail Road into Anita Drive.

Knowing that this is a gang hotspot area, Lt Col Schoeman’s gaze followed the man as he entered Anita Drive. The 17 year old teenager was seen tucking a firearm into his pants. Immediately Lt Col Schoeman contacted SAPS Gelvandale and requested for backup.

While waiting for backup to arrive, the brave officer followed the suspect in his private vehicle. The suspect entered a house in Anita Derive. When backup arrived, the house was searched and a revolver was found in a drawer.

The teenager was arrested and detained on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm. The serial number was filed off.

Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brig Thandiswa Kupiso applauded the brave action of the police officer. ‘Actions such as this portrays service excellence and commitment. Ensuring the safety and protection of the citizens of this country is a loyal trait that is embedded in the characters of our men and women in blue,’ added Brig Kupiso.
