KOMANI — A 36-year-old man, Andile Nkomo, has been handed life imprisonment by the Komani Regional Court following his conviction for the brutal rape of his former partner. The sentencing, delivered on June 12, 2026, also officially declared the perpetrator unfit to possess a firearm, drawing strong praise from local law enforcement leadership.
Major General Rudolph Adolph, the Chris Hani District Commissioner for the South African Police Service (SAPS), publicly endorsed the severe sentence. He specifically highlighted the exceptional investigative efforts of Detective Sergeant Mhlanguli Gama from the Cofimvaba Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. According to Adolph, Gama’s diligent work was instrumental in securing a penalty that accurately reflects the gravity of the crime.
The harrowing ordeal began on the night of October 24, 2021, at approximately 22:00. The 36-year-old victim was at her residence in Mbinzana Locality, within the Bholothwa Administration Area, alongside her 14-year-old daughter. Nkomo arrived and aggressively forced his way in by pounding on the door, compelling the victim to open it. Upon her compliance, he demanded she travel with him to his own home in the nearby Dudumashe Locality of Bholothwa.
When the woman refused the demand, Nkomo escalated the situation by pulling out a knife in full view of the teenager. Terrified for her safety, the victim was forced to accompany him. Once they reached his residence, the situation turned violently physical. Nkomo subjected the woman to a severe beating before ordering her to undress. He proceeded to rape her repeatedly over the course of the entire night.
The victim was finally able to flee the property the next morning while her attacker was asleep. This horrific attack occurred despite the victim having already taken legal precautions; she had previously secured a protection order against Nkomo after he issued threats of vengeance due to his anger over their relationship ending.
Seeking justice, the survivor reported the assault to the Bholothwa SAPS station on October 25, 2021. Police acted swiftly, arresting Nkomo on that exact same day. The accused spent three months in police custody before the court granted him bail. After a prolonged legal process involving multiple court appearances, the case culminated in his final sentencing on June 12, 2026.
