Valento Magilies Quentin (19) was sentenced on Friday 28 February 2020, to an effective eight years in prison for killing of an off duty police officer.

Magilies was found guilty of one count of murder for fatally stabbing Constable Shane Nico Fleur (26) on 1 May 2019. Constable Fleur was fatally stabbed during an argument with the teenager while he was off duty with friends at Kruisfontein in Humansdorp just outside Port Elizabeth.

The argument emanated after Magilies knocked Fleur’s vehicle with bicycle. A heated argument ensued between the two and in the process Magilies suddenly produced a knife and stabbed Constable Fleur in his chest and fled with his bicycle from the scene.

Fleur was rushed to a local hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Magilies was arrested later the same evening in Arcadia in an integrated police operation. The Humansdorp Regional Court convicted and sentenced Magilies to eight years in prison on Friday for Fleur’s murder.

The Hawks provincial management has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of Magilies as this will deter would be police killers from committing such genius crimes.

The Hawks also commended the prosecuting team for speedily finalizing the case in court.
