After several warnings to exit a dense bush, a 24-year-old theft out of motor vehicle suspect was eventually apprehended by police K9 ‘Mufasa.’

It is alleged that on Sunday, 20 December 2020 at about 03:20, K9 members responded to a complaint of a theft out of motor vehicle in progress at Horizon flats in Park Drive in Central.

On arrival the members found the left passenger back window of a silver VW Polo Vivo broken. The members then utilized their dogs, Mufasa and Bentley to search the dark thicket behind an apartment building. Within minutes, Mufasa apprehended the suspect as he tried to jump over a wall. A handbag was discovered next him in the bush where he was hiding.

The owner of the vehicle positively identified the handbag.

The suspect was detained on a charge of theft out of motor vehicle and will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Monday, 21 December 2020.

Police are urging people not to leave valuable items in view in their vehicles. Always ensure that these items are removed from the vehicle or placed in the boot. Leaving valuables in the vehicle attracts opportunistic and habitual thieves.
