A second suspect was arrested on the afternoon of 14 March 2021, after he ran off when police intercepted the vehicle, reportedly stolen on Friday, 12 March 2021 in the Walmer Heights area.

It is alleged that at about 04:40 on Friday morning, 13 March 2021, K9 Unit members were alerted by a private security of a suspicious silver Toyota Corolla in the Walmer Heights area. When the suspects spotted the police vehicle, they sped off with police in pursuit. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. His passenger was arrested.

The vehicle was reported stolen in Jeffreys Bay in January 2021.

A number of items, suspected to have been stolen, have been recovered. The vehicle was fitted with fake number plates.

The 35-year-old suspect is appearing in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on 15 March 2021 on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of suspected stolen property.

At about 17:00 on Sunday, 14 March 2021, off-duty K9 unit members followed up on information received on the whereabouts of the driver. He was found at a house in Zwide.

When he saw the police vehicle, he attempted to escape through the back door armed with a knife. K9 ‘Max’ was utilised after he failed to heed warnings to stop. In his desperation to get away, Max was kicked in his face and the suspect jumped over the boundary wall. Despite being assaulted, Max pursued after him and apprehended him.

On searching his house, several suspected stolen goods were found. Among others, 5 boat fuel tanks, a blue light, a music box, boat ropes, and a cellphone were confiscated.

The 33-year-old suspect was detained on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property. He is expected to appear in court soon. Detectives are probing possible links to several cases of housebreakings in the Kabega Park, Walmer and Mount Road areas.
