Humewood hijacking: 1 Suspect shot another arrested

Within 30 minutes after a 40-year-old man was allegedly hijacked at a garage in Humewood, two suspects were arrested and the hijacked vehicle recovered.

It is alleged that on Sunday evening, 29 August 2021 at about 23:00, the complainant was at a garage in Rink Street in central when three unknown males approached his vehicle and got in. He was pointed with a firearm and ordered to drive to Richmond Hill and get out.

The suspects drove off with his grey Suzuki sedan.

At about 23:25, SAPS Kwazakele Vispol Task Team members were patrolling when they received information of the alleged hijacking. The vehicle’s tracker was activated and the members picked up the signal on the M17 heading towards Missionvale.

The vehicle was spotted and when the suspects noticed the approaching police vehicle, they accelerated. While trying to evade arrest, the suspects attempted to push the police vehicle off the road. Shots were fired at the hijacked vehicle’s tyres causing it to burst however this still did not deter the suspects from stopping.

The vehicle was eventually pulled over in Khuzwayo Street in Kwazakele and 3 suspects jumped out of the vehicle and started running. One suspect, aged 29-years-old sustained two gunshot wounds in his right leg while the second suspect, aged 24-years-old was arrested near the vehicle.

The third suspect managed to escape.

Both suspects are detained on a charge of vehicle hijacking and are expected to appear in court soon.

The recovered hijacked vehicle is impounded for further investigation.
