Residents opposed to the mining south of the Wild Coast clashed with the Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe.
Richard Spoor (photo), a human rights attorney, was arrested after a ‘war of words’ with Mantashe and police had to use tear gas to disperse rioters.
Spoor was released on bail and will appear in court today, 25 September 2018.
The community was not given a chance to air their grievances and it led to ‘the war of words’.
