The Uitenhage Acting Cluster Commander welcomes the sentence that was handed down to the two hijackers on Thursday, 20 June 2019, by the Uitenhage Regional Court.
The accused, Vuyisanani ‘Poza’ Magida (26) was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the first charge of hijacking and four years for the second charge of attempted murder. The second accused, Sithasolwazi Treasure Qaku (26) was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for the first charge of hijacking and four years for the second charge of attempted murder.
Their sentence are to run concurrently.
A court testimony revealed that on Saturday, 6 May 2017 around 20:30, the two accused, who were armed with firearms stormed into a house in Makhotshomela Street, KwaNobuhle and held a homeowner at gunpoint. One of the accused shot and wounded a victim before fleeing with his VW Polo.
The victim’s vehicle was later recovered abandoned in Port Elizabeth. During the incident, a 50 year old homeowner sustained gunshot wound in the upper body. Forensic evidence positively linked the two accused to the scene of crime. The court also declared the two to be unfit to possess firearms.
Uitenhage Acting Cluster Commander, Colonel Zolile Douse welcomed the sentence and also commended the investigating officer, Detective Constable Zukisa Busakwe for his sterling work in the case. “This sentence is going to serve as a deterrent to those who are committing serious violent crimes”, added Colonel Douse.
